Cross-country skiing paradise Vallunga (1600 – 1800 m)
From Selva Gardena, Vallunga provides a magnificent backcloth for cross-country skiing. The Vallunga valley is in the nature park of Puez-Odle, to the north east of Selva.
It can be reached from the central parish church of Selva di Val Gardena in about 15 to 20 minutes. Car parking is available behind the Carabinieri training centre. The local branch of the Selva Alpine and Cross-Country Skiing School is nearby, with cross-country ski rental and a convenient meeting-point and source of materials. This is also the starting point of the cross-country skiing route of the Vallunga valley.
The first level section contains cross-country routes of one, two and three kilometres, indicated by blue and green signs and highly recommended for beginners! Skilled cross-country skiers might like to try the five-kilometre “red” training route, which is approved by the National Cross-Country Skiing Association. A longer cross-country skiing route (signposted in black) runs through the entire valley in a ten-kilometre loop, passing in front of fantastic mountain slopes of the Stevia and Chedul range, right up to Pra da Ri meadow.
A 50x50 m biathlon centre is located at the entrance to the valley, next to the cross-country skiing school and ski-rental point. Further information: Selva Alpine and Cross-Country Skiing School – Tel.: +39 0471 795156

Winter walks - Enjoy nature leisurely
Plenty of walks pass meadows, bring you along small rivers to idyllic farms, until reaching tranquil benches ideal for relax. There you can admire the beautiful landscape, the villages, the woods and mountains. You will be enchanted. |
Vallunga
From the parking lot to the entrance of Vallunga, we start in direction to the Saint Sylvester’s Chapel. Passing the chapel, we continue along the gravel path that conducts to Pra da Rí, where we find a hut on a marvellous lawn that offers us the possibility to rest and enjoy the fascinating alpine world of the Nature Reserve Puez-Odle. We refresh us with the water from the wooden fountain and start the way back on the same path.
"Via Crucis"
This path, one of the most ancient of Val Gardena, leads under the wall of the Stevia mountain, in an angle of nature indeed delicious. It begins on ‘Daunëi’ and it conducts to the Saint Sylvester’s Chapel in Vallunga. It is also a path of meditation, with 15 Stations of the Cross, which were created by a group of local artists in 1983. The single stations of the Passion of Christ have been carved into tree trunks. An explanation booklet is available at the parish priest’s house.
The ruins of Wolkenstein Castle
Can be reached by a steep path that branches off to the left at the Carabinieri training centre in Vallunga. The path can also be reached from St. Silvester’s Chapel. The return route is via Daunëi to the centre of Selva. (The path can sometimes be used with caution in late winter). |
